Mirabello Sannitico

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 2,157 · Postal code: 86010

The ground here has shaken many times: in 847, in 1294, in 1309, in 1456, in 1587, in 1688 and in 1794. Of the one in 1688 it is remembered that nobody died, because when the shock came almost everyone was out in the fields.

On 26 July 1805 it went differently: the earthquake killed almost six thousand people in Molise, three hundred in Mirabello, and the church of San Nicola collapsed entirely. The town first appears in February 1193, when abbot Ferulfo names the church of San Salvatore, on the Tappino. Over that water the people of Mirabello and of Ferrazzano long fought each other. There are 2,157 residents.

📅 Every year, on 23 April

Mirabello Sannitico celebrates Saint George on 23 April; the earliest reference to the town dates to a church register from February 1193, while the earthquake of 26 July 1805 reduced the already-damaged church of San Nicola to rubble.
