Guardiaregia

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 787 · Postal code: 86014

On the coat of arms there is a crowned crane holding a stone in its raised claw: the old symbol of vigilance, since a crane that falls asleep drops the stone and wakes itself. The name says the same thing: here, on the hill of La Motta, the Lombards put a fortress to keep watch over Campochiaro.

The village, 787 residents, lies at the foot of Monte Mutria, and its woods and gorges have been a WWF oasis since 1997: extended later into the territory of Campochiaro, it reaches 3,135 hectares, the second largest in Italy. Of the old church little is left: the 1805 earthquake brought it down, and San Nicola was rebuilt in neoclassical style.
