Vinchiaturo

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 3,238 · Postal code: 86019

The name, scholars say, may come from Vinculatorium, a place of binding, of control: the town sits on a height that commands the valley floor, like many Apennine settlements that in the Middle Ages served to watch the roads.

The first documents are of the eleventh century and concern the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria di Monteverde, on the ridge: earthquakes struck it more than once, and in the end it was left a country church. Before that this was land of the Pentri Samnites, between Saepinum and Bovianum. The 3,238 residents live at six hundred metres, among the fields and pastures above the Biferno valley.
