Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December San Polo Matese celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the town preserves a Lombard tower, evidence of its medieval past.
In the Rogati palace, alongside a nativity scene of 1961, sit two fossils found just below the village: the skull of an aurochs, the extinct wild ox, and the only known specimen of a fossil called Rudista distefanella, turned up by the digging for the provincial road at the foot of the town.
The village lies halfway up the slope between the Matese and the Biferno. The earthquake of 1805 brought the castle down and people rebuilt using its walls: two towers survive, one serving as the bell tower of San Pietro in Vincoli, the other the tenth-century Lombard one, whose breach at the base became the arch you walk through into the old quarter. Population: 458.
