Larino

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 7,142 · Postal code: 86035

On 26 January 1564, the very day Pius IV confirmed the decrees of the Council of Trent, bishop Belisario Balduino opened his seminary here: Larino claims to have had the first episcopal seminary in Christendom.

The Romanesque-Gothic cathedral of San Pardo has a rose window with thirteen rays, unique of its kind. Of the Roman town there remain the amphitheatre, the baths, the forum and mosaics; the name went from Frenter to Ladinod, then Larinum, Larina, Alarino, and finally Larino in the nineteenth century. The ducal palace, founded in the eleventh century, now holds the town museum and the historical archive. The 7,142 residents press oil from the Gentile di Larino olive.
