Rotello

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,219 · Postal code: 86040

Rotello was once called Loritello, and it gave its name to a Norman county that ran from the Tronto to the Fortore, along the coasts of Abruzzo, Molise and Puglia. Its counts — the first was Robert, a nephew of Robert Guiscard — had themselves called comes comitis, count of counts, and served at court as the king's paladins. Frederick II dissolved the county in 1220.

The name itself comes from lauritellus, land of laurels. Today the 1,219 residents live across seventy square kilometres of hills just back from the coast, and what grows best here is the olive: two ecotypes, the Rosciola and the Cellina di Rotello, give an oil the village has been taking around since 1994 as a city of oil.
