Ururi

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 2,793 · Postal code: 86049

In January 1074 the Norman count Robert of Loritello gave the church of Larino the monastery he owned in the place called Aurora. At the foot of the deed he did not sign: he made the sign of the cross, as those who could not write did.

From Aurora, over the centuries, came Urure and then Ururi: perhaps it was the Albanians who arrived before 1500 who bent the old name to their language, in which the town is called Ruri. Arbëreshë they still are, even if the Byzantine rite was suppressed around 1700. On 3 May the 2,793 residents run the carrese: two carts pulled by oxen, three kilometres of road.
