The village is made of five contrade, and they did not appear together: inside the walls the Terra, on the flank the Costa — the quarter of the Byzantines, of Greek rite — then the Croce, grown up around the chapel of San Rocco in the late seventeenth century, and finally Fontanelle and Via Roma, two centuries later. For generations the contrade eyed each other warily: Latins, Byzantines, Spaniards, Slavs.
The score is still settled on 16 August, for San Rocco, with the Palio delle Contrade, a horse race. And for Sant'Antonio the fires are lit thirteen evenings running, one after another through the districts of a village that now counts 384 residents.
