Montenero di Bisaccia

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 6,649 · Postal code: 86036

On the night of 26 September 1712 some sixty Turks besieged the tower of Montebello, where the country people had taken refuge: they held out until reinforcements arrived from Vasto, led by count Filippo Ricci. It was the last Turkish raid on this coast.

The town comes from a village called Bisaccia: abandoned during the invasions, its people took shelter in the sandstone caves and then climbed the hill covered with thick scrub, the black mountain. In those same caves, for more than thirty years, the living nativity has been staged. The 6,649 residents grow wheat, vines and olives, and make ventricina; below, at the mouth of the Trigno, lies the marina.
