Oratino

Province: Campobasso · Region: Molise · Population: 1,560 · Postal code: 86010

On the rock above the town stands what is left of a twelfth-century Norman tower: square in plan, twelve metres high, with its door raised off the ground, because you climbed up by a wooden ladder that could be pulled in if attacked.

Below that tower are Samnite remains in polygonal masonry. The town's name comes from Loretinum, which meant a small plantation of laurel. At Palazzo Giordano duke Giuseppe had the four corner towers pulled down to modernise the house, in the eighteenth century. In the parish church hangs the Assumption that Ciriaco Brunetti signed in 1791; he and his brother Stanislao were from here. There are 1,560 residents.
