Above Busso, on Monte Vairano, a ring of cyclopean walls encloses fifty hectares: inside you can make out the houses, the temple, the square, and near one of the three gates a kiln for pots has come to light. Historians long argued over whether this was Livy's Aquilonia; after the Social War, in any case, the hill was abandoned.
Today's village, 1,367 residents, grew up lower down and gave its name to a family that went far: Nicola Santangelo was the longest-serving interior minister of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, and the square is named after him. Beside the Sant'Onofrio fountain stands the church of Santa Maria in Valle, put back on its feet in 1870 after the earthquake.
