Civitanova del Sannio

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 955 · Postal code: 86094

In 2011, under a rock just outside the village, along the old drove road to Castel di Sangro, paintings of animals came to light: one of the first pieces of rock art found in Molise. Six years earlier, at Santa Brigida, archaeologists had brought back the Benedictine monastery of the White Mule, eleventh-century, abandoned after the earthquake of 1456.

Its bell tower has been put back up piece by piece, with its own stones. The village, 955 residents, is called Civitanova because there was an old one next door, the Civitavecchia now called Duronia; the del Sannio arrived in 1864, to tell it apart from the others.
