The patron saint of Cerro al Volturno is Saint Emygdius, celebrated on 5 August. Born in Trier in 273 and died in Ascoli Piceno on 5 August 303 or 309, Emygdius was a Roman bishop venerated by the Catholic Church as a cephalophoric martyr, that is, depicted holding his own severed head: he is the patron of the city and diocese of Ascoli Piceno, as well as of the towns of Leporano and, indeed, Cerro al Volturno, and is traditionally invoked as a protector against earthquakes.
The town, which stands in the upper Volturno valley, in Molise, preserves the Castello Pandone, among the sites that dominate the municipal territory together with Monte Santa Croce and Monte Petrara.
