Carovilli

Province: Isernia · Region: Molise · Population: 1,428 · Postal code: 86083

In 1668 duke Fabio d'Alessandro granted the people of Carovilli a few guarantees, and had them written down: that workers be paid properly for their labour, and that nobody could send pregnant women out to work by the day.

The name is thought to come from the Roman consul Spurius Carvilius, whom Livy names in his tenth book. The first document that speaks of Carovilli is of 1068: a count Borrello, of Pietrabbondante, was giving property to the monastery of San Pietro Apostolo. In the parish church there is a marble holy water stoup carved with the portraits of baron Agapito d'Alessandro and his wife. There are 1,428 residents.
