Bergamasco

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 765 · Postal code: 15022

Bergamasco stands on the left bank of the Belbo, where the Monferrato hills run out. A stronghold of the marquises of Incisa from before the year one thousand, it passed in 1514 to the Marquisate of Monferrato, when William IX Palaiologos took Incisa. The commune kept their arms: azure with nine gold stars.

The Palazzo Marchionale, built by the Moscheni marquises, still shows its round brick tower above the remains of the wall; it now holds a cinema museum. In 1985 a Roman sarcophagus of the second century turned up on a farm estate, in use as a cattle trough: the inscription gives it to a freedman named Calventius.
