Mombaruzzo

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,153 · Postal code: 14046

Mombaruzzo is the easternmost comune in the province of Asti, stretched along a ridge with vineyards climbing its slopes. A municipal coat of arms is recorded here as early as 1337, but no description of it survives: we know it existed, not what it showed.

The village gives its name to its amaretti, made with sweet and bitter almonds, egg white and sugar, plus armelline, the kernels hidden inside apricot stones, which add the bitter edge. Wine is the other story: the cooperative winery started in 1887 and was the first of its kind in Piedmont.
