Castelnuovo Belbo

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 895 · Postal code: 14043

Castelnuovo Belbo was long called Castelnuovo d'Incisa, after the marquisate it belonged to from the twelfth century. The name first appears in 1003, in a charter calling it «Castro Novo qui dicitur supra Relho»: new castle, nothing more. The Belbo, which runs through it, is the only watercourse of any weight in the territory.

The parish church of San Biagio is bare brick: a pediment at the centre, two scrolls at the sides, a frescoed lunette above the door. The town hall of 1877 opens an arcaded portico on the climbing main square. On 21 August 2000 the village was the epicentre of the southern Piedmont earthquake, and both buildings needed serious repair.
