Masio

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,465 · Postal code: 15024

Masio sits on the right bank of the Tanaro, on the border of Upper and Lower Monferrato, and lived off the river crossing. In 1190 its consuls bargained with Alessandria and Asti: toll exemptions and war aid for both, and in return the men of Masio paid no toll anywhere and became citizens by right of both towns.

The deal did not hold: in 1223 peace between Alessandria, Asti and Alba was signed in the church of Santa Maria, and it broke down over Masio. The parish church of Santa Maria e San Dalmazzo keeps the rose window of the old front, in white and red ashlar; the brick facade is later nineteenth century.
