Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August Bruno, a municipality of 351 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
Old Bruno stands on the hill facing Mombaruzzo; the rest of its land drops into the plain of the Belbo. Of the Lombards only the water names are left: Gherlobbia would mean the sheepfold, Ghisone the property of one Wiso.
The marquesses Faà di Bruno are named after the village. The surname is said to come from fea, dialect for sheep, or Celtic-Gaulish fea, fairy: and the family arms do carry a monstrous fairy, with bat wings and a serpent's tail. Camilla Faà married the duke of Mantua in secret, was repudiated and shut in a Ferrara convent, and her memoir passes for the first prose autobiography by an Italian woman.
