Saint Crescentinus, the soldier who fled Rome
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of June
On the first Sunday of June Crescentino celebrates its patron: a Roman soldier who in 297, rather than renounce the Christian faith, left the capital.
Crescentino too is a planned town: Vercelli founded it in 1242 as a borgo franco, on land that had belonged to the chapter of Sant'Eusebio, then to the abbey of San Genuario and finally to the principality of Lucedio. The layout was an irregular quadrilateral cut by a main street and by three minor lanes: the historic centre is still that one.
It stands where the Dora Baltea flows into the Po, and the position cost it dearly: a border between Monferrato and Savoy, a military garrison from 1613, besieged in 1625 and in 1715. On 8 September 1944 the Germans shot nine men on the station forecourt, and eleven days later they burned the town: thirty-nine houses destroyed.
