Altavilla Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 497 · Postal code: 15041

Altavilla Monferrato looks north over the Grana valley, where the provinces of Alessandria and Asti meet. In 1026 Conrad II granted the territory in fief to the abbey of Novalesa; in 1320 the village sided with Theodore I of Montferrat, who walled it and built a castle. A few ruins survive inside a later residential palazzo.

The parish church of San Giulio, consecrated in 1630, has a bare brick front with two statues in niches and holds a Last Supper by Guglielmo Caccia, il Moncalvo, a painter from these parts. By the war memorial stands a Statue of Liberty said to be the work of Paul Landowski, who designed Rio de Janeiro's Christ the Redeemer.
