Camino

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 802 · Postal code: 15020

Camino was a fief of the bishops of Asti, then of the marquises of Montferrat. Marquis Theodore Palaeologus, refused a loan by his father-in-law and needing to reach his father Andronicus in Constantinople, took ten thousand silver florins from the Scarampi bankers of Asti against Camino and Pontestura: Pontestura was redeemed, Camino was not. The town arms carry the red and white of Montferrat beside the gold pales of the Scarampi.

The castle goes back to the eleventh century, and a stone inside records the year 1010. Camino was also home to Giovanni Battista Boetti, the friar who by one tradition was the prophet Mansur, leader of an Islamic army against Catherine of Russia.
