Trino

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 7,437 · Postal code: 13039

Trino stands a little back from the left bank of the Po, at the foot of the Montferrat hills, some twenty kilometres southwest of Vercelli. The first settlement was probably Celtic and was called Rigomagus, the king's market; from the second century BC it was a Roman mansio, a posting station by the ford on the Po.

It was at Trino, around the fifteenth century, that rice growing was introduced for the first time, and it still carries the economy of the area. Charles Emmanuel III raised the place to the rank of city by letters patent of 7 January 1763. The abbey of Santa Maria di Lucedio and the Partecipanza wood both stand in its territory.
