Palazzolo Vercellese

Province: Vercelli · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,292 · Postal code: 13040

Palazzolo lies near the left bank of the Po, among rice fields, with the Monferrato hills on the skyline. Its origins are Roman: so say the finds, and the plan of the old centre, a regular castrum. The town arms show the goddess Athena on green ground, shield left, spear in her right hand.

A small square off corso Italia holds the parish church of San Germano, with thirteenth-century roots, and the little church of the Angels, with its tall narrow bell tower. The remains of the patrons Caius and Faustina have lain in a glass urn since 1626; in June 1795 the mint asked the village for a contribution and the bell of the Apostles' church was melted down.
