Feast of Saint Andrew
📅 Every year, on 30 November
On 30 November Solonghello celebrates its patron Saint Andrew; the town preserves the Castello di Solonghello.
The place name is probably Germanic: it is thought to come from the personal name Swal, with the suffix -ing, which marks belonging, and the diminutive -elus, meaning the small territory of a leader called Swala. The first notice of a comune here goes back to 1016, when several families rebelled against the church of Vercelli and banded together as di Soalingellum.
The old stronghold was raised in the twelfth century by a vassal of the marquesses of Monferrato, and changed hands many times. In 1522 it took in nobles of Casale fleeing the plague; later Spanish and German troops sacked it repeatedly in the long wars around the citadel of Casale. Monferrato passed to the Savoys with the treaty of Utrecht.
