Morano sul Po

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,511 · Postal code: 15025

Morano's name appears in a document of 961, but the place is older: a late Bronze Age necropolis came to light at Pobietto, under a rice field. Three explanations of the name compete and none is decisive: gold in the alluvial soil, mulberries for silk, Saracen raids. The words "sul Po" come from a decree of 1862, to tell it from the Moranos of Calabria and Umbria.

Between town hall and parish church stands the Casa degli Archi, Gothic, of brick: pointed arches below, an open loggia above, the town library inside. Morano then lived a century on cement, the marl coming from the Coniolo quarries on carts ferried across the river.
