Feast of Saint Agatha
📅 Every year, on 5 February
On 5 February Pontestura celebrates its patroness Saint Agatha, to whom the town's church is dedicated; the great esplanade hosts «Riso & Rose» and the July Festa in Piazza.
Pontestura comes from Pons Turris, the bridge with the tower, which is also the image on its coat of arms. In the castle, the Palaeologi's summer home, three marquesses of Monferrato were born and Ludovico il Moro was held prisoner; Margherita Paleologa, born there in 1510, married Federico II Gonzaga, and that marriage settled the passage of the marquisate to Mantua. The castle was pulled down under Napoleon; the square keeps its name.
Sant'Agata, the parish church, has a front in alternating bands of brick and pale stone, a rose window and pinnacles; before the door, paving of black and white river pebbles. Aldo Novarese, who drew typefaces, was from here.
