Castellar Guidobono

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 427 · Postal code: 15050

Castellar Guidobono lies between the Grue and the Curone, on the last slopes of the Curone valley. It first appears in a diploma of Otto II of 979, granting chancellor Gerberto jurisdiction over Tortona up to the Castello degli Squarzoni: Castello meaning castrum, a fortified place, and Squarzoni from its feudal lords.

The rest of the name comes from the Guidobono Cavalchini of Monleale, who held it in fief. Early in the sixteenth century, when the French took the duchy of Milan, the Guelphs of Viguzzolo nearly destroyed the village in revenge on its Ghibelline lords. The yellow-brick church is dedicated to Saint Thomas the Apostle, as the mosaic over its door says.
