The arms show a young man wrestling a lion and gripping it by the jaws. Many take him for Hercules, but he is more likely Samson: in the Book of Judges he kills the lion bare-handed by tearing its jaws apart, while Hercules had strangled his. The motto of the Squarzoni, the family the blazon comes from, bears this out: De forti dulcedo, "out of the strong came forth sweetness".

The monastery of the Annunziata is fifteenth-century and housed Augustinian nuns; pope Clement XIV suppressed it in 1770, and today it holds the town hall, the schools and the library. Earlier still, when the Sforza came, the town was forced into a public submission under threat of destruction.
