Volpeglino

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 160 · Postal code: 15050

Volpeglino stands on the left bank of the lower Curone, in the province of Alessandria, and its name comes from the Latin vulpicula, the place of foxes. It was a court of the abbey of San Colombano at Bobbio, listed among its lands as Vulpidino, Vulpiclinum and Vulpiclini. A fief of the Guidobono, a free commune in 1245, it passed to the Visconti, who granted it in fief to the Guidobono Cavalchini. The arms, though, carry no fox but a golden lion running on a red field.

In 1928 Volpeglino was merged into Volpedo and vanished from the list of municipalities; in 1947 it broke away and existed again. The parish church of Santi Cosma e Damiano replaced an older pieve dedicated to Saint Damian alone, of which very little survives. The village farms wine grapes and strawberries, and is known with Volpedo for intensive peach growing, begun in the early twentieth century by Antonio Guidobono.
