Castelletto Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,558 · Postal code: 15040

The village was once Castelletto Scazzoso, from the Latin Castrum Scatiosorum, and took its present name in 1937. The arms tell both halves of it: a two-tiered tower for the little castle and, behind, the Alps recalling the Monferrato, the Mons Ferratus. The promontory it sits on is about two hundred metres high; on clear days the plain of Marengo is in view.

At the top stand the old castle, reached by a brick stairway squeezed between two walls, and the parish church of San Siro, built when Castelletto became a comune in the early eighteenth century. In 1859 Vittorio Emanuele II and Garibaldi met at villa Pona, in the second war of independence.
