Quargnento

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,397 · Postal code: 15044

Quargnento probably began as a Roman outpost, later the bishop of Asti's land; in 935 kings Berengar and Adalbert granted it a monthly market at the calends. It was one of eight settlements that helped found Alessandria, sending forty families. Frederick Barbarossa reportedly kept his headquarters here; his siege failed and the castle burned, leaving only the dialect name an castè.

The relics of the martyr Dalmazio came from Pedona, harried by Saracens, and stayed: their church is the only basilica in the diocese of Alessandria, a title given by John Paul II in 1992. The brick bell tower, with its clock, is seen from far off. The painter Carlo Carrà was born here.
