Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Visone, a municipality of 1,257 inhabitants in the province of Alessandria, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul: the two wooden statues are carried in procession.
Visone carries the name of the stream that crosses it and joins the Bormida just below. The first record concerns the castle: on 4 May 991 Anselmo I, marquis of Montferrat, and his wife Gisla signed there the founding charter of the abbey of San Quintino di Spigno. Little is left of the Malaspina rebuilding, but the battlemented tower stands whole, with the gate through the walls and much of the moat.
Under the village lies the biocalcarenite named after it: pietra di Visone, quarried in Roman times, and the columns in the crypt of Acqui cathedral are of it. After 1572, for the Santa Croce works at Bosco Marengo, a quarry was opened on the heights.
