Felizzano

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,421 · Postal code: 15023

The name is a Roman estate name built on the cognomen Felix, which points to a late-antique origin. The village sits on a terrace above the Tanaro, at the last point where the ford is both forced by the narrow valley and overlooked from above: the via Fulvia very probably crossed here, and later the road to France.

In the fifteenth century the marquisate of Monferrato found itself split into two territories that did not touch, and to hold them together the strada franca del Monferrato was set up: a duty-free route running through Felizzano. Because it crossed Milanese land, it was a matter of dispute with Milan for centuries. The village is first mentioned in 880.
