Fubine Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,657 · Postal code: 15043

The name is traced back to fibulina, 'little buckle', after the brooch-making once carried on here, and the town's coat of arms repeats that explanation. The comune was simply Fubine until 2017, when Monferrato was added at the town council's request.

The old village wraps around a hill, with the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta on top and a maze of lanes below. Of the Spalto, all that is left of the walls, you can still walk the arcaded gallery at the foot of Casa Pane, an eighteenth-century house; and there is the bridge, with a wide ditch once running beneath it.
