Viarigi

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 955 · Postal code: 14030

Viarigi clings to its hill, among steps, passages and retaining walls. A document of 1041 lists the court of Viarigi, with castle and chapel, among the goods of the bishop of Asti. On the ruins of that castle, around 1320, the Torre dei Segnali went up: the village sat on the Monferrato border, and signals passed to Moncalvo, Vignale and other hilltops.

The diocesan register of 1345 counts four churches here, one in the woods; San Marziano is the poorest, three lire against the others' tens. It stands alone in the grass, its stone apse ribbed with columns and blind arches. The tower, emblem of the village, belongs to the comune: a benefactor, Pietro Bellettato, bought it to give it away.
