Moncestino

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 228 · Postal code: 15020

Moncestino joins a strip of plain on the Po to the hill the village sits on, with the hamlets of Cignaretto, Coggia, Ganoia, Piagera and Seminenga. The castle on the hilltop rests on the ruins of an older one: on 12 September 1245 the marquis of Monferrato Bonifacio II invested the Miroglio with it, requiring them to fortify the site and live there; the family held Moncestino and Villamiroglio together until the division of 1407.

In the war of the Monferrato succession the Miroglio sided with the Gonzaga and the castle was destroyed by Savoyard troops; it was rebuilt in baroque form in 1650, with a two-tier front of pilasters and string courses. The arms repeat those steps: quartered, they carry a black eagle, a bunch of grapes, the six mirrors of the Moncestino family and the five red bends of the Del Carretto.
