Verrua Savoia

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,459 · Postal code: 10020

Verrua Savoia is the easternmost comune of its province and touches three others, Asti, Vercelli and Alessandria; the Po divides it from Vercelli. Verrua comes from the Latin verruca, a knoll; the rest of the name is late, added in 1862 by Victor Emmanuel II to record what the fortress had meant to Piedmont.

In 1387 Theodore II of Monferrato besieged the fortress and after two months had to give up. From it came the saying: when the pig takes the grape, the marquis of Monferrato takes Verrua. Pig and grapes come from the village seal and are still in the coat of arms; the fortress was wrecked in a later siege and never rebuilt.
