Murisengo

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,450 · Postal code: 15020

Murisengo sits at the north-western tip of the Alessandria province, on the eastern edge of the Valle Cerrina. On 10 October 2025 the village lengthened its name to Murisengo Monferrato. Luigi Lavazza, founder of the coffee firm bearing his surname, was born here. East of the village rises the Pirènta, a sulphurous spring where a spa prospered in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century; a powder magazine stands there now.

Corteranzo was a separate municipality until 1928, and its arms carried a juniper bush, a nod to the Giunipero family. Of the castle, repeatedly rebuilt, the great tower survives: there, in 1813, Silvio Pellico wrote his tragedy Francesca da Rimini.
