Spigno Monferrato

Province: Alessandria · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,126 · Postal code: 15018

Spigno stands on a knoll skirted to the south by a bend of the Valla, above the Bormida valley; it borders Liguria and is the southernmost town in the province of Alessandria. Its arms carry a thorn plant, canting arms that repeat the village name; since Barbarossa's day the community governed itself by its own Statutes.

Spared by the plague of 1630, the village vowed a yearly thanksgiving procession. In 1669 Marquis Federico Asinari, demanding corvées to rebuild the castle the Savoys had pulled down, hired and hid in his palace a band of mercenaries to fall on the inhabitants on procession day. The plot was found out, the procession called off, and the people rose.
