Serole

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 142 · Postal code: 14050

Serole is the southernmost village in the Asti province and the only one bordering Liguria. It lies in the Langhe, on the watershed between the Bormida di Spigno and the Bormida di Millesimo, by the Rio Rigosio, and at Bric Puschera it touches the province's highest point. The name first appears in a document of 991; in 1209 Oddone I sold the place to the commune of Asti but kept the investiture.

Later it changed masters, and then provinces. The treaty of Utrecht handed it to the Kingdom of Sardinia; it belonged to the province of Acqui, in 1859 the Rattazzi law moved it to Alessandria, and in 1934 it was detached to form the new province of Asti. Around it lies the harshest, least inhabited Langa of woods, ravines and meadows, the boundary dropping towards Savona.
