Antignano

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,025 · Postal code: 14010

The name changed shape several times: medieval documents write Anteljanus, Anterjanus, Antessianus and Antonianus before the present form settled, and the Latin family name behind it is unclear. The first certain record is from the year 870, when the village appears among the possessions of the emperor Louis II.

In 1419 Giovanni Turco, leading the Monferrato army, failed to take the citadel of Asti and besieged Antignano: beaten, he fled leaving his siege engines behind, and the villagers paraded them through the streets of Asti. Antignano looks down from its hill over the Tanaro, and here Francesca Armosino was born, the last wife of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who later came to see her land.
