Govone's castle was a medieval stronghold and is now the town hall; it keeps the double-ramp state staircase, with telamones brought here from the gardens of the Venaria Reale. In 1730 a young man just turned eighteen arrived to serve count Francesco Ottavio Solaro: his name was Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Under the German occupation Michelina Saracco, who ran a bus service in the village, hid and protected her own neighbours, the Jewish family of Vittorio Dan Segre, and saved them from deportation. In 1988 Yad Vashem in Jerusalem recognised her as Righteous Among the Nations.
