Aramengo

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 632 · Postal code: 14020

The name ends in -engo like other villages nearby: a Germanic suffix, from German -ing. The root may be a personal name, also Germanic, or a hermitage nobody remembers. The village and its hamlets sit on the ridge between the Versa, the Stura and the rio Meinia, at three to four hundred metres.

The arms carry a barbel, the Balbiano fish, borne crowned in gold on red: the last family to whom the Radicati passed their fief, piece by piece; they still own property here. The parish church of Sant'Antonio Abate, built between 1770 and 1791, is bare brick, with a wide bell tower carrying the clock; inside, paintings by Guglielmo Caccia, il Moncalvo.
