Feast of Saints Agatha and Vitalis
📅 Every year, on 5 February
On 5 February Moransengo, a municipality of 212 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patrons Saint Agatha and Saint Vitalis, after whom the parish church is named.
Moransengo sits on a Monferrato ridge that works as a watershed: the Stura, the Versa and the Triversa rise in the hills it shares with Tonengo and Aramengo. The suffix -engo points to Germanic, more precisely Lombard, origins; the Latin name Muratianum Astensium became Moransengum after a village of Lombard people settled here around the year 700. Of the early Middle Ages nothing is known, beyond the place being a fief of the bishop of Vercelli.
French troops besieged and sacked the village in 1704 and burned the hilltop castle: the houses then moved down towards the present parish church of Saints Agatha and Vitalis, and the manor became a lordly residence. The municipal arms showed a red tower with a weathervane on a green hill. Since the first of January 2023 Moransengo is no longer a comune of its own: it merged with Tonengo into Moransengo-Tonengo.
