Tonengo

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 197 · Postal code: 14023

Tonengo stands on a hill north of Asti, on the Roman road that linked Asti to Industria; some scholars hold that the Cimbri founded it. By 770 it counted for something, enough for Charlemagne to grant it in fief to Aimone Radicati, count of Cocconato. It later fell into the orbit of Monferrato, and in 1292 the men of Asti, then besieging Albugnano, beat the marquis's troops here.

The arms are quartered: a silver letter T dressed in red, a purple bunch of grapes, three ears of wheat bound with silver, an oak bearing five golden acorns. At the hamlet of Ottini, alone on a hilltop, stands the twelfth-century church of San Michele, its apse carrying corbel arches and three bays of small multi-arched windows, its flanks alternating brick and sandstone. Since the first day of 2023 Tonengo is no longer a comune, merged with Moransengo into Moransengo-Tonengo; not for the first time, since it spent part of the twentieth century attached to Cocconato, regaining its council after the war.
