Calliano

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,392 · Postal code: 14031

Calliano stands at 258 metres on a ridge that separates the Valle Versa from the Valle Grana, among vineyards of barbera and grignolino. Since July 2022 the town has officially been Calliano Monferrato, a change its council asked for unanimously. On its land is the Pirenta, a sulphurous spring long credited with healing and cleansing powers.

The churches measure the place's age: San Michele dates to the tenth century, the parish church of the Santissimo Nome di Maria to the eighteenth, and between them stands Romanesque San Pietro, of the eleventh, alone in the grass, its gable front banded in brick and pale stone, with small arches under the eaves and a radiating doorway.
