Castell'Alfero

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,750 · Postal code: 14033

The castle, already there in the Middle Ages, was turned around 1730 into a lordly residence for the counts Amico: the design is by the royal architect Benedetto Alfieri, and the painted decoration by Gerolamo Mengozzi, who had worked with Giambattista Tiepolo. In 1905 the comune bought it for sixty-four thousand lire and moved its offices in.

The town's arms come from those of the counts Amico, which bore the motto Usque ad cineres, "to the ashes": a play on the family name, a friend to the death. Before them, in 1616, Castell'Alfero had been sacked and destroyed by the soldiers of the duke of Mantua, at war with Savoy.
