On 15 August Tonco, a municipality of 899 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
Tonco, Tonch in dialect, stands on the hills of the Basso Monferrato, in the province of Asti, and is the seat of the Monferrato Valleversa hill community. Its arms gather the houses that ruled it from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance: the lion in the first quarter almost certainly repeats the arms of Gerardo di Tonco, first master of the Hospitallers of Saint John.
The other half carries the three red bands and cork oak of the Natta. The village lives on farming, its houses clinging to the slope: tiled roofs climb in steps to the church, a wide brick building whose spired bell tower shows from afar.
