Montemagno

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,162 · Postal code: 14030

The old core of Montemagno keeps the triangular plan of the medieval village, cut by twelve lanes each marked with a Roman numeral. The place appears in a document in 1119, when a dominus Guglielmo di Montemagno witnessed an act protecting the rights of the Church of Asti; it then stayed border country, disputed between Asti and the marquises of Monferrato. In 1269 the Brolio sold the city a quarter of the castle, and the deed listed walls, gate, tower and palace.

Since 2023 the municipality is officially called Montemagno Monferrato. The parish church of Santi Martino e Stefano stands at the top of a broad stone staircase, with its curved colonnaded porch before the front.
